The Victorian era is generally agreed to stretch through the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). It was a tremendously exciting period when many artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. It was also a time, which today we associate with "prudishness" and "repression". Without a doubt, it was an extraordinarily complex age, that has sometimes been called the Second English Renaissance.

The dress of the early Victorian era was similar to the the Georgian age. Women wore corsets, balloonish sleeves and crinolines in the middle 1840's. The crinoline thrived, and expanded during the 50's and 60's, and into the 70's, until, at last, it gave way to the bustle. The bustle held its own until the 1890's, and became much smaller, going out altogether by the dawning of the twentieth century. This would have been a very appropriate dress as the turn of the century neared and could be worn as a Dickens Caroler or any woman of distinction.

This full length gown is available as shown but plaid fabrics may vary. We also include a crushed velvet cloak with attached hood.

We understand the difficulty in obtaining the precise measurements of your children (we all have kids of our own). As a good rule of thumb, the age of your child is normally the size that your child wears. However, only you know your child, so please take note as to whether your child is large, small or average for her age, and choose her size accordingly.

  1. With her arms at her sides, measure around the fullest part of your child's chest.
  2. Measure your child's waist around her natural waistline, keeping the tape comfortably loose.

Please be sure to order belts two inches longer than your child's pant waist size.

*Note: Our Products come from a variety of sources and manufacturer’s sizing standards may vary. A comments box is provided when you place your order and we definitely welcome any additional sizing information and measurements to help us get it right the first time!
