The 1700's were an exciting time for the people who had sailed far from their homes to build a new life in the Americas. The United States were born in those times. While the clothing and shoes of Europe were getting more and more elaborate, the clothing of the new country were simple and often homemade. This was due to the high price of having things shipped all the way from Europe.

Our Colonial shoes reflect the simple style of our founding fathers. Although forced to wear simpler shoes, there was still a wish to have some ornamentation, and so the large shoe buckle was added to the shoes of the time.

Men such as George Washington and Ben Franklin would have worn shoes much like these as well as the pilgrims who first settled in America. The one difference is that shoes of the 1700s were shaped the same for both feet and were therefore uncomfortable to wear until they were broken in. Our shoes are modern in this instance and have a right and left foot and will be more comfortable to wear.
